  The Arrival of Buddhism A key milestone in the history of Bhutan was the introduction of Buddhism in the 7th century. The arrival of Guru Padmasambhava in the 8th century further strengthened Bhutan’s spiritual foundation. Formation of the Bhutanese State The 17th century marks a turning point in the history of Bhutan , when Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal unified the country. He established a dual system of governance and built many dzongs (fortresses) still in use today. The Era of Isolation For much of its history, Bhutan followed a policy of isolation. During this period, the history of Bhutan was marked by limited foreign contact, helping preserve its traditions and cultural identity.
